January 2021 U.S. dairy exports were the second highest in volume and third highest in value for any January on record, despite challenges such as port congestion and container shortages. Exports of nonfat dry milk and skim milk powder dropped by 10% due to U.S. port issues, despite global prices remaining competitive. Cheese and lactose exports also saw a decrease, but whey exports continued to grow, and butterfat exports increased by 80%. Dairy heifer exports to Pakistan and Mexico remained strong, with new inquiries from other countries. However, shipping challenges are affecting hay exports, resulting in the lowest volumes in five years. The U.S. Dairy Export Council, National Milk Producers Federation, and International Dairy Foods Association have accused Canada of not aligning its tariff rate quotas with USMCA commitments. Krysta Harden has become the new president and CEO of the U.S. Dairy Export Council, pledging an aggressive approach to growing U.S. dairy exports.
