The United States is the world's largest importer of fresh fruit and vegetables, with imports growing at a rate of 3% in the first half of 2022, reaching 21.5 million tonnes in 2021. Mexico is the top supplier, followed by Germany, with over half of the imports being from Mexico, mainly tomatoes, peppers, and avocados. Other significant suppliers include Guatemala, Costa Rica, Canada, and Ecuador. Imports from Peru have grown by 18% in the first half of 2022, primarily grapes, onions, and blueberries. The United States also ranks as a major exporter, with an annual export of about 6 million tonnes, although this figure is decreasing, with the Netherlands and the United Kingdom being the main importers of U.S. sweet potatoes.
