The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) has implemented new conservation measures for tropical tuna in the eastern Pacific Ocean, following advocacy by the United States. These measures include science-based catch levels, renewed management measures for yellowfin, bigeye, and skipjack tunas, and efforts to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. Additionally, the commission has limited the number of fish aggregating devices (FADs) that each vessel can track and mandated the reporting of sonar data from FADs for scientific purposes. The IATTC has also increased catch limits for Pacific bluefin tuna and extended protections for silky sharks. These measures aim to ensure the sustainable management of tuna and other highly migratory species in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
