The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has allocated over $70 million to fund 383 projects under the Plant Protection Act’s Section 7721 program, aimed at enhancing the country's infrastructure for pest detection and surveillance. These projects will be carried out by various organizations across 49 states, District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico, with a focus on safeguarding the nursery production system and responding to plant pest emergencies. The funding includes $14 million for rapid response to invasive pest emergencies, and projects for honey bee and pollinator health, biosecurity, forest pests, and surveillance of the Sudden Oak Death pathogen. This initiative aligns with the International Year of Plant Health, underscoring the USDA’s dedication to protecting agricultural resources.
