Uttar Pradesh has outperformed Maharashtra in sugar production for the 2022-2023 season, despite having fewer operational sugar mills. The state produced 107.29 lakh tonnes of sugar, compared to Maharashtra's 105.30 lakh tonnes, occupying the most area for cane cultivation and crushing the highest volume of cane. Uttar Pradesh also led in the amount of sugar diverted for ethanol production. The current government, led by Yogi Adityanath, has made significant payments to farmers and has been instrumental in opening new or expanding existing sugar mills. The previous governments, however, saw the sale and closure of several sugar mills. The Uttar Pradesh government has directed sugar mills to remain in operation until June 15.
