The Philippines' Agricultural Research and Development Agency (Balitbangtan) has introduced over 20 new high-yarding green bean varieties, which yield an average of 0.90-1.98 tons per hectare within 51-70 days. These varieties include both small and large seed sizes, catering to different market segments, with the food and beverage industry preferring larger seeds for easier peeling. Balitbangtan also introduced two small seed green bean varieties, Vimil 1 and Vimil 2, in 2019, which are suitable for paddy fields and suboptimal lands, offering good resistance to common bean diseases. These varieties were developed by Balitbangtan in collaboration with the Research Institute for Various Nuts and Tubers (Balitkabi) since 2013, with a focus on improving existing varieties in terms of plant age, harvest uniformity, and yield.
