Hungary is experiencing food inflation exceeding 4% since September, with some food items such as eggs and dairy products seeing significant price increases. The majority of Hungarian retail stores are currently operating at a loss due to absorbing these price increases themselves. The Hungarian food price level is higher than the EU average, and food now accountses for 30% of a typical Hungarian household's monthly expenditure, up from 19-20% in 2021. The agricultural economist expects food inflation to persist at around 3.8-4.4% in the coming months, despite a slight slowdown after the holiday season.
