Spring frosts and a pest called the North American walnut shell drill have led to a significant decrease in walnut production, resulting in a scarcity and a sharp increase in price. A kilo of peeled walnut kernels now costs between four and five thousand forints, making it a luxury item for many. In contrast, poppy seeds are more widely available and much cheaper, costing between one and a half to two thousand forints per kilo. The high use of poppy seeds in traditional holiday dishes and pastries, coupled with their accessibility and lower cost, has made them a popular alternative to walnuts.
