What will the final potato harvest be in Northern Europe?

Due to abundant rainfall, many potatoes in Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands (EU-4) have not yet been harvested. The harvest period was too short to store the potatoes in good conditions. Contracts for the coming season must take into account higher risks and costs. Seed availability is an issue and a concern for spring 2024. After a moderate summer, the average potato yield was generally good. In the EU-4 a yield of 45.8 tonnes per hectare was achieved. That is 6.3% more than last year. Combined with a larger area, this brings the total yield estimate in the EU-4 to 23.6 million tonnes (22.9 million tonnes in 2021, a somewhat comparable year). For the time being, it appears that approximately 22.2 million tons have been harvested. So there is still about 1.4 million tons in the fields.
