Hungary has seen a decrease in cabbage production and an imbalance in trade for the past year, with imports falling by 38% in the first half of 2022. The country produced the smallest amount of head cabbage in the past decade, 37.2 thousand tons, in 2021. The price of cabbage has significantly increased at the Budapest Wholesale Market, with primordial white head cabbage costing 58% more than last year and prime red cabbage costing 4% more. The price hike is due to high utility costs and unexpected increases, which have made cabbage less affordable and more expensive, ranging from HUF 450 to HUF 500 per kilogram.
