Vinh Chau town in Soc Trang province is grappling with a significant surplus of onions, estimated at over 51,000 tons, due to a combination of factors including market fluctuations, COVID-19 impacting export capabilities, and competition with lower priced onions from China and Thailand. This surplus has led to a drop in prices for local onions, affecting farmers negatively. In response, the province has stepped in to support poor households by purchasing onions at a higher price. A meeting is scheduled to address the issue and explore solutions, involving local authorities, businesses, and other stakeholders. The challenge lies in the perishable nature of onions and the current inability to export, exacerbated by lower prices for purple onions due to competition from imports.
