China is the world's leading importer of cassava and tapioca starch, with Thailand and Vietnam being its main suppliers. In 2021, China's cassava imports reached $1.41 billion, a 97.6% increase from 2020, and its tapioca starch imports amounted to $1.52 billion, a 51.6% rise from the previous year. This surge is primarily due to the recovery of China's pig industry and challenges in maize supply from South American weather conditions. In 2021, Vietnam became the largest exporter of cassava and cassava products to China, accounting for 93.6% of the volume and 92.9% of the value of total exports. Despite China's strict import and export policies due to COVID-19, Vietnam's exports of these products are expected to rise in 2022.
