Pastor Dagunduro Gideon, President of the Grassroot Beekeepers of Nigeria, has proposed beekeeping and honey production as a means for Nigeria to diversify its economy away from oil. He made this suggestion during the celebration of "World Bee Day" in Abuja, which is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of bees for food production and the environment. The United Nations-recognized day also highlights the potential of beekeeping to improve food security, support agricultural livelihoods, and reduce biodiversity loss. Gideon pointed out that the demand for honey and bee-related products is increasing in various industries, including cosmetics, medicine, and confectioneries, and that the Nigerian honey market is valued at N3 billion annually.
