The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has declared 2021 as the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables. To mark the occasion, the first seed deposits of the year, including strawberry, watermelon, and pumpkin seeds, have been added to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Around 6,500 seed samples from gene banks in South Asia, Europe, and Africa have been deposited, with the National Genebank of Mali contributing 3,446 seeds, primarily sorghum. The Seed Vault, which has been operation for 13 years, serves as a backup for gene banks to preserve crop diversity and prevent genetic erosion by storing duplicate seeds. It is designed to last and will next open in May and October this year.
