Worsening of swine fever in Europe leads DGAV to warn of prevention

African Swine Fever (ASF), especially in Europe, has been getting worse and the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Medicine (DGAV) has now warned of the need to reinforce prevention measures, in order to avoid the introduction of the virus in Portugal. “The epidemiological situation of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Europe and the world has been worsened due to the high number of outbreaks of ASF in wild boars, especially in Italy, Poland and Greece. Furthermore, outside the European Union (EU), but still in Europe, it was found that ASF was introduced in Albania and Montenegro”, reads the DGAV statement. Given the situation, the DGAV issued an informative note that aims to “raise awareness among all stakeholders to reinforce preventive measures in order to avoid the introduction of the ASF virus into national territory, as well as reminding that it is mandatory to notify any suspicion or occurrence of ASF in pigs and wild boars”, explains in the communication.
