Shache County in Xinjiang, China, is the world's largest production base for almond wood, also known as Badan, with a daily harvest of approximately 3,100 tons during the picking peak. The county has planted 930,000 mu of Badan trees and 850,000 mu of fruit-bearing area, accounting for 95% of the national planting area. Despite the labor-intensive traditional picking methods, the demand for Badan is increasing due to its use in the food and beverage industry, especially in China, where the industry has seen an 8.3% compound annual growth rate. This demand is currently not met by domestic production, with most production located in the U.S. and China's planting starting in Henan Province. The renaming of 'American almonds' as 'Badanmu' in China in 2015 to avoid consumer confusion and mislabeling reflects the growing importance of this product in the Chinese market.
