Xylella fastidiosa, a bacterium that affects over 500 plant species, has been reported in the Balearic Islands and several regions in Spain, including California and Apulia, Italy. The bacterium causes plant symptoms such as leaf drying and tree death. In the Balearic Islands, the disease was introduced in the 90s and has affected over 100,000 trees and plants, leading to the uprooting of trees that tested positive. The head of the Plant Health Service of the Valencian Community has stated that the final eradication of the plague is very difficult and has prioritized more external work in the demarcated area to prevent its advancement.
