Since mangoes are harvested in different countries across seasons, the supply is available all year round. The taste, skin color, and texture of mangoes vary with the fruit's variety and country of origin. Currently, major exporting countries like Mexico, Brazil, Peru, and Thailand are their peak season. Some new trends can be seen in the main mango exporting countries as the 2021 season begins.
Mango Seasons in Major Exporting Countries

Mexican mango season in 2021 began in the first week of January and is expected to run until the first week of October. Mango production in the first half (up to mid-June) is expected about 12% more than the previous season and 11% higher than the average volume in the past 5-years.
According to Arturo Retes, Engagement Manager at Tridge, mango prices are expected to increase in the global market in the upcoming season despite the higher production. Mexico’s mango now has to comply with tighter quality and health controls when exported to the U.S, complying with USDA regulations. The producers also have to comply with global certifications on social responsibility such as Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA), covering the four pillars of labor, health and safety, environment, and business ethics. To comply with these regulations, mango producers in Mexico would have to invest large amounts of money, which are most likely to increase their production costs, hence the prices.
Mango arrivals in the 2021 season are expected to be less than the volume recorded last year, which is likely to impact Peru’s exports. The current prediction of mango shipments from Peru to the U.S. is only 20% of what was exported to the U.S. during the last season. The low arrivals are also driving up mango prices in Peru from USD 0.7 per kg in April 2020 to USD 1.46 per kg in April 2021. Peru has also witnessed that the marketing strategies were shifted as face-to-face purchasing has transformed into online shopping due to Covid-19.

Brazil exported 15.3 thousand tons of mangoes between January and February 2021, which is about 5% more than the volume recorded during the same period in 2020. According to
Francielle Rozzatti, Engagement Manager at Tridge Brazilian mango market, has high expectations from this season as Côte d'Ivoire experiences shipping issues, which supplies mango to the European market between April and June. Many contracts were canceled last year in Europe to import from Côte d'Ivoire, which have not been renewed this season. It is expected that the Brazilian mango may have greater penetration in the European market for the upcoming season.
Thailand’s mango exports will also be projected to be affected by the pandemic in the upcoming season. According to Rata Kirkthanasatit, Engagement Manager at Tridge, the price of Thai mangoes is expected to fall compared to the previous year at the same period due to low exports. It has been seen that fewer packhouses are buying directly from the mango farms, which is forcing the mango farmers to sell their mangoes to the wholesalers market instead of the packhouses or the middleman. In the last six months, the prices fell by 58% to record an all-time low of USD 0.10 per kg on mangoes in April.
