The Asociación Agraria de Jóvenes Agricultores de Almería (ASAJA-Almería) has reported a significant increase in watermelon production during the early stages of the spring campaign, with the surface area doubling compared to the previous year. Primary greenhouse watermelon production areas, Bajo Andarax, and Campo de Níjar, are expected to begin harvesting after Easter. Producers in Almería prolong production cycles to reduce costs and enter the market when competition is lower. However, over 10% of medium cycle cultivated area in Poniente has been reduced due to growers preferring other crops.
Watermelon consumption in the United States (US) has risen significantly, with per capita consumption increasing to nearly 16.9 pounds (lbs) in 2023 from 15.5 lbs the previous year. This growth is driven by increased awareness of the fruit's health benefits and versatility. The US primarily imports watermelons from Mexico and Central America, with Mexico as the largest supplier. Despite challenges like adverse weather affecting Mexican production and potential cold weather risks to the domestic crop, a good harvest is expected. The US melon market is projected to reach USD 1.19 billion by 2030, driven by consumer demand for healthy food options and innovative marketing. However, higher production costs have led to increased watermelon prices, which are expected to remain strong with the start of the domestic supply.
The GyeongnamGovernor visited the cities of Haman-gun and Miryang-si to assess crop damage to watermelon and perilla leaves caused by insufficient sunlight from Dec-23 to Feb-24. A major producer of these crops, Gyeongnam saw over 1.2 thousand hectares (ha) affected. The governor has announced several measures, including on-site inspections, recovery plans, and financial aid for affected farmers. This aid includes disaster relief fund payments, extended repayment periods, and reduced interest rates on loans from the Rural Development Fund. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will also conduct a detailed investigation and provide additional disaster relief assistance.
