In W28 in the melon landscape, Hungarian melon producers have started to sell their harvest, an estimated yield of 10 to 12 thousand tons of melons for the summer season. Forecasts suggest a promising melon season, offering an opportunity for the domestic fruit. On the other hand, in the wholesale market of Rome, Italy, unusual weather patterns until mid-June have impacted demand, production, and melon prices. The heavy rains during May and early June reduced production and quality, resulting in low demand and prices at the beginning of the season. However, the sudden heatwave in late June led to a surge in demand, causing prices to increase significantly compared to the previous year. The wholesale price for melons ranges from USD 3.26-3.91/kg (GDP 2.50-3/kg) in the Rome market, with higher prices reaching USD 4.56-5.22/kg (GDP 3.50-4/kg) for products from Lombardy.
Furthermore, adverse weather conditions in May and early June have resulted in a shortage of melons in Mallorca, Spain, including both locally produced and imported varieties. The variety Marina stood at USD 2.61/kg (GDP 2/kg). Lastly, in Turkestan, Kazakhstan, an area of 71.3 thousand hectares is allocated for cultivating melons and gourds. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Turkestan has harvested 405 thousand tons of melons. The main export destinations for these domestic melons are Russia, Belarus, and Latvia. Melons are the second most significant export-oriented product in the Turkestan region, following cotton.
