In Primorsky Krai, 124,000 young Far Eastern trepang were released into the Stark Strait as part of an environmental compensation effort for the construction of the VNIRO mariculture center on Popov Island, which began in 2019. This center is a key facility in Russia for marine aquaculture research. The Far Eastern sea cucumber, important in traditional Chinese medicine and Russian pharmaceuticals, is protected under the Red Book of Russia, with wild extraction banned in the Far East, allowing only aquaculture-grown products for market distribution.
