The USDA expects a significant decrease in Japan's fresh cherry production due to climate change, with an estimated fall to 14,700 tons for the 2024-2025 season. This is attributed to damage caused by high temperatures in the most productive regions. As a result, Japan's fresh cherry consumption is projected to exceed production, reaching 20,600 tons. Currently, the United States is the primary supplier of fresh cherries to Japan, accounting for about 91% of the market share in the 2023/24 season.
