Peru's National Meteorological and Hydrological Service (Senamhi) has reported that 2024 was the country's warmest year on record, with a national average annual temperature of 20.29 °C, surpassing the normal annual average of 19.11 °C by 1.18 °C. This temperature rise reflects global trends, making 2024 one of the warmest years globally. The heatwave was not linked to the El Niño phenomenon but was persistent across the coast, mountains, and Amazon region. The eastern central highlands, western central highlands, southwestern highlands, and high northern jungle experienced the most significant temperature increases, with some regions reporting temperatures over 40 °C. The national average annual temperature has been consistently above the normal value for the past 11 years, with 2023 and 2024 being the years where the average exceeded the historical average by +1 °C.
