A research team in Egypt has registered five male date palms, a first in the country, to be used for pollination and the importation of new palm varieties. The palms, a cross between Umm Barhi and Abu Majhal, were selected for their high vitality, ornamental value, and compatibility with various palm varieties. The registration is part of a broader effort to expand and improve the dates sector, which is economically significant for the country. The registered males will be multiplied to provide more palms for pollination and to address compatibility issues with different palm varieties.
