63 million euros: Pig farmers in Spain suffer major losses due to African Swine Fever

African swine fever (ASF) returned before November 2025 in Northeastern Spain after a 30-year hiatus, and the industry saw a serious threat to the entire sector. Spain is the largest producer of pork in the European Union, providing about 1/4 of the production in the Community, and the circulation of the infection in the country's territory led to heavy losses for the farmers, specialists commented. According to the German Association of Pig Producers (ISN), referring to the Spanish farmers' union Unió de Pagesos, the regional pig industry suffered losses of 63 million euros only for the months up to the end of 2025.
