Naxos, a Greek island, is experiencing a crisis in its dairy farms due to the economic impact of the Ukraine war. The surge in prices of feed, fuel, fertilizer, and electricity has led to the slaughter of over 300 cows, 30,000 goats, and sheep. This crisis threatens the production of Naxian graviera cheese, which has EU Protected Designation of Origin status and requires local milk from cow, goat, and sheep. The Naxos Association of Agricultural Cooperatives (EAS) is contemplating export restrictions and ceasing production of other cheeses to conserve local milk for graviera. The cost of imported feed has escalated, further straining the farmers.
