Sardinia is facing a severe threat from the bluetongue disease, which is impacting its sheep and cattle populations. This disease is spread by the Culicoides insect, whose activity is heightened by global warming. The island's sheep industry, vital to its cultural and economic fabric, employs over 27,000 people and is known for producing pecorino cheese. The Sardinian government has allocated 13.5 million euros to support affected farmers, although the financial losses could reach 25 million euros. Developing effective vaccines is difficult due to the virus's 27 serotypes and the possibility of new strains emerging each year.
