Germany is now the second country in Northwest Europe where – as it stands now – potato cultivation is not or hardly growing. This while the potato processors tried to persuade the farmers with considerably higher contract prices to grow more potatoes. The industry needs more potatoes to be able to realize the growth ambitions in sales. Acreage of potatoes in France In France, a slight decrease (-0.3%) in the area of consumption potatoes is expected to 154,076 hectares. Starch potato cultivation will also have to deal with a significant reduction in area of more than 10%. The cultivation of starch potatoes is therefore decreasing to less than 19,000 hectares. Other crops Germany This year, more field beans (+13%), peas (+12%) and rapeseed (+7.6%) are growing on German fields. These crops replace grain and grain maize.
