Brazil has no need to worry about mad cow disease, says Major General Dr. Ehab Saber, Assistant Minister of Agriculture and Head of the Veterinary Services Authority. He assured that a permanent committee will make scientific decisions to protect citizen health and maintain import prices. The suspension of Brazilian meat imports due to mad cow disease will be temporarily halted until laboratory results are available. Saber clarified that the disease is not transmitted to humans if the animal is infected at a certain age. The case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy detected in a 9-year-old male animal from Para state has led to the suspension of Brazilian meat imports by Russia, Jordan, Iran, and Thailand. However, Egypt, a major importer of Brazilian meat, continues to include it in its market.
