The Agriculture and Food Authority seized 32 tonnes of avocados being smuggled to Tanzania in violation of a two-month export ban. The avocados were found in four lorries at the Namanga border point, packaged in gunnery and polythene bags, and were intended for export to other destinations once in Tanzania. The ban on sea exports of avocados affects several varieties primarily cultivated by Kenyan farmers, and those involved in the export of immature avocados risk penalties including cancellation of their licenses.
