The Ministry of Agriculture in Egypt has reported a significant increase in the import of European potato seed for the 2022-2023 season, with a 18% rise to 141,138 tons compared to the previous year. The majority of the seed comes from the Netherlands, Belgium, Scotland, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, Germany, England, and Poland, with the 'Kara' and 'Espunta' varieties being the most popular. These imports are expected to increase further, reaching 160,000 tons by mid-January 2023. This comes as potato prices in the Egyptian market fluctuate due to supply and quality variations, and the cost of potato seeds has increased this season. The agricultural season in Egypt typically spans half a million to 650 thousand acres, with planting and harvesting happening at different times throughout the year.
