The All India Sugar Traders Association (AISTA) has reduced its forecast for India's sugar production in the 2022-23 season to 34.5 million tonnes, marking a decrease of 3.63% from the previous year's production of 35.8 million tonnes. The production estimates for the major producing states, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, have been lowered to 12.4 million tonnes and 10.5 million tonnes respectively, compared to the previous year. Additionally, AISTA anticipates that around 5 million tonnes of sucrose will be diverted for ethanol production from sources such as B heavy molasses, sugar syrup, and sugarcane juice, due to the impact of the red rot disease on sugar recovery rates in western and central Uttar Pradesh.
