The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) is strategizing to diversify its marketing efforts after reducing its reliance on the Chinese market. This includes opening a regional office in Bangkok for a marketing campaign in Southeast Asia and expanding its Brazilian marketing program across Latin America. In 2020, the institute received $7.5 million from the USDA to promote agricultural trade, which it has now sought to increase with a request for 55% co-financing from the state legislature. The institute has seen success in Southeast Asia and Latin America, particularly in Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines, where Alaska's fish and seafood exports have doubled since 2013.
