A new citrus fruit called Alizza, a hybrid of mandarin and pomelo, is being introduced in European markets. Developed by Israel's Volcani Institute and cultivated in Spain by AM FRESH, the fruit is named after plant breeder Aliza Vardi. The fruit is larger than usual, with a unique taste combining characteristics of mandarins, oranges, and a hint of grapefruit, and is seedless. Its juice has antimicrobial properties against Pseudomonas bacteria, according to the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Plants of Valencia. The fruit will be initially produced in Spain and South Africa for year-round availability, and will be distributed in three major European chains: Marks & Spencer in Britain, Edeka in Germany, and Eroski in Spain.
