Almeirim in Portugal melon considered a geographical indication

At the end of June, the Official Gazette published Dispatch no. 6211/2021, which determines that «protection should be granted, at national level, to the name “Melon de Almeirim/Melon d'Almeirim” as a geographical indication”. This document is signed by the Secretary of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Rui Manuel Costa Martinho and takes effect from 1 June 2021, «date of submission of the application for registration to the European Commission». According to the document, "the use of this designation of origin is reserved for products that comply with the provisions contained in the respective specification file deposited with the General Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development."
