Ray Hilborn, a University of Washington professor, has highlighted the Peruvian anchovy fishery as a model of sustainability that other fishing industries could learn from. The fishery's sustainability is achieved through the collection of information on the distribution and abundance of the resource by commercial fishing vessels, and by adjusting the catch according to the anchovy population. Since a fishing policy was implemented in 2009, the anchovy population in Peru has remained stable. Hilborn also pointed out the lower environmental impact of industrial anchovy fishing compared to other products used in aquaculture, and the potential negative effects on biodiversity if these products were to be replaced with soy.
