The Portuguese Association of Animal Compound Food Industry (IACA) is urging the Portuguese government to intervene in a strike by Spanish carriers, which is disrupting supplies of essential animal feed materials such as meat meal, poultry meal, fat, maize, and barley. IACA's secretary general, Jaime Piçarra, has called for urgent action, including European Union intervention to contain cost increases and prioritization of food sovereignty and the use of cereals for animal and human food rather than biofuels. The association also recommends increasing storage capacity, supporting the food sector, and easing imports of genetically modified cereals from non-EU countries.
