The National Institute of Fisheries Science announced on October 29 that Korea has secured an annual catch of up to 240 tons of toothfish (Mero) in the South Pacific for the next three years (2025-2027). This is because the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization (SPRFMO)'s experimental fishing plan for developing new fishing grounds for toothfish was recently passed by the organization's Scientific Committee held in Lima, Peru. It is scheduled to receive official approval at the annual meeting to be held in Chile in February next year. The new experimental fishing will be conducted in the 110,000㎢ fishing grounds in the South Pacific adjacent to the Southern Ocean, including the distribution and resource amount of toothfish, its relationship with the Antarctic toothfish stock, and bycatch species.
