Peru is a major global exporter of fresh mangoes, ranking second behind Brazil and following Mexico, and exports about 10,000 containers per campaign (each containing 23 tons) mainly to Europe (60%) and the US (35%). However, there is potential for growth in the Asian market with the Peruvian mango variety, as the country has recently started exporting to China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, and is working to open markets in Thailand and Vietnam. The Peruvian Association of Mango Producers and Exporters (APEM) is planning to capitalize on the opportunity by targeting the gourmet niche in Asia through air shipping. The association is also hosting the XXI International Congress of the Peruvian Mango in November to address industry challenges and strategies for increasing production and export volumes.
