The Animal Products Management Committee has approved a European Commission Implementing Decision to update the classification methods for pig carcasses in Italy, with all members in favor except for Malta. The new methods, including the Hennessy Grading Probe 7, Fat-O-Meater II, CSB-Image-Meater, and Manual method ZP - Zoometer, will be used to more accurately assess lean meat content. These methods were shown to be accurate and compliant with EU legislation through dissection tests submitted by Italy. The decision will be effective from 1 February 2025, aiming to enhance transparency and efficiency in the pig slaughter sector in Italy.
