The Russian government is working towards increasing self-sufficiency in seed material for potatoes to 50% by 2030 and 75% for other crops. To achieve this, a law on seed production was adopted in 2021 and the Federal Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Agriculture for 2017–2030 has led to the registration of 38 new potato varieties. The Union of Potato and Vegetable Producers anticipates over 200-250 new domestic varieties by 2030, with a focus on varieties for processing. The potato harvest exceeded 7 million tons in 2021, leading to lower prices and reduced demand. The Union is advocating for retail chains to support domestic producers to help sell the surplus.
