Asparagus is the vegetable with the largest cultivation area in Germany

Asparagus is one of the most important seasonal vegetables in Germany and is often harvested by seasonal workers, the Federal Statistical Office reports. Last year, a total of around 108,100 tonnes of asparagus were harvested in Germany. The harvest volume fell by 3% compared to the previous year and thus remained at a relatively low level. In 2024, the largest amount of asparagus - 22,600 tonnes - was harvested in Lower Saxony, followed by Brandenburg (20,200 tonnes), Bavaria (19,400 tonnes) and North Rhine-Westphalia (18,500 tonnes). Together, these four federal states harvested three quarters (75%) of the total asparagus harvest in Germany. One reason for the relatively low asparagus harvest is probably the reduction in the arable area. Last year, asparagus was grown on 19,800 hectares of productive land.
