The Australian beef herd is expected to grow to its highest level since 2014, with 28.8 million head in 2023, and further growth in the following years. This growth is due to record retention of females and above-average weaning rates, leading to increased calf production and supplies. However, slaughter capacity will be a key factor in adult cattle slaughter in 2023. If labor availability improves, adult cattle slaughter is projected to increase by 7.7% in 2023, reaching 6.625 million head. Otherwise, it may stay at 2022 levels. Beef exports are also expected to increase by 160,000 tonnes in 2023, continuing to grow in 2024.
