According to the Austrian Institute of Statistics, on December 1, 2022, there were around 1.86 million head of cattle in the country (-0.5% or -9000 animals compared to 2021), 2.65 million head of pigs (-4.9% or -135400 animals), 400700 sheep heads (-0.4%) and 99000 goat heads (-1.6%). Thus, in 2022 fewer cattle, pigs and horses were slaughtered, but more sheep and goats. As for the number of pigs, compared to December 1, 2021, the number of heads decreased in all categories. The number of piglets and piglets decreased by 4.8% to 1.32 million head, that of fattening pigs by 4.5% to 1.12 million head and that of breeding pigs by 7% to 212,000 head.
