In 2023, Austria saw a continued decline in its cattle and pig populations, with a significant 5.0% decrease in pigs. As of December 1, 2023, the country had around 1.835 million cattle and 2.516 million pigs. The number of sheep and goats also fell by 2.2% and 2.1% respectively. This decline was reflected in the reduced number of farms breeding these animals and a decrease in pig and cattle slaughters. However, despite the decrease in their population, the number of sheep and goat slaughters increased.
