High temperatures and westerly winds have caused a significant crop drop in litchi fruits in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, affecting hundreds of farmers. The heatwave, with temperatures reaching up to 45 degrees Celsius in some areas, has led to a delay in fruit setting and a decrease in fruit quality and size. As a result, the litchi production is expected to be between 40,000-50,000 tonnes this year, a major decrease from the 70,000 tonnes produced last year. The farmers are seeking compensation for their losses and are facing challenges in irrigating their orchards due to high costs. The National Research Centre on Litchi and other horticulture experts have recommended regular irrigation to maintain moisture in the face of rising temperatures.
