The Premium Bread Makers Association of Nigeria (PBAN) is urging all levels of government to devise strategies to boost local wheat production to reduce reliance on imports, which are negatively impacting the economy. This call comes amidst a four-fold increase in bread prices in Nigeria this year due to a global shortage in the wheat value chain caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The president of the association, Emmanuel Onuorah, mentioned that the bakery sector has been significantly hit, with many bakeries shutting down and those still in operation experiencing a decrease in capacity and an increase in the cost of bread ingredients. Nigeria, which consumes about five million tons of wheat annually, produces only a small fraction of this amount locally.
