Despite the government's efforts to control prices during Ramadan by reducing value added tax and import duties on essential goods, the impact has not been seen in the market. Prices of sugar, palm oil, dates and rice have increased in major wholesale hubs. Traders attribute the price hike to increased import costs and demurrage charges. The Consumers Association of Bangladesh has expressed concern that traders and importers are benefiting from the duty reduction instead of the consumers. Market manipulation by traders, reportedly with the support of local administration and due to a lack of strict law enforcement, has resulted in the prices of most commodities going beyond the purchasing capacity of ordinary people.
