Beekeepers in Spain, France, and Portugal are joining forces to combat the surge of fraudulent honey imports, which according to a 2023 European Commission report, account for up to 46% of honey samples analyzed at the border. This issue is threatening the sustainability and quality of the European honey industry. The beekeepers are urging the European Union and Spanish Government to enhance border controls, validate analysis methods, and ban ultrafiltration, a technique often used in honey fraud. The call for action follows startling data from a European Commission report that showed over half of Spain's honey imports were fake, with 85% of analyzing companies failing at least one control.
