The Belgian pig sector is set to launch its own animal welfare label, titled 'Belpork', which will allow supermarkets and butchers to offer locally sourced pork that exceeds statutory animal welfare standards. The label will provide consumer transparency and allow producers to differentiate themselves. Based on the Beter Leven Keurmerk from the Netherlands and the Initiative Tierwohlin from Germany, the label will be supported by the Flemish Ministry of Agriculture and is expected to align with these quality marks. The Belpork label expands on the generic quality system, BePork, which is a market access condition for the pig sector and was launched on January 1, 2021.
